David Herbert

David Herbert joined the Digital Institute as a Research Software Engineer April 2019. His main background is in GIS and geospatial web systems; built around Open Source software stacks.

He has worked in both commercial transport sector and UK government; most recently with British Antarctic Survey. He was the architect of a self-service Web Mapping Engine; enabling researchers to build maps to showcase polar research data and combine diverse datasets in novel and informative ways. He has considerable expertise in the creation of Spatial Data Infrastructures and of Open Source Data Discovery systems such as GeoNetwork.

On the software development front; David has server-side experience in Java; C; PHP; Perl and client-side JavaScript. Passionate about the potential of the Open Source world; he is a regular online contributor to development forums.
