N8 CIR Women in HPC Chapter

The N8 CIR is proud to be a Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) chapter since 2021. We strive to foster a diverse and inclusive community within N8 CIR, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds.

Empowering Women in HPC

Our mission is to:
  • Advocate for gender balance and inclusivity within N8 CIR and among collaborating academics.
  • Identify and help to overcome barriers preventing women from participating in training workshops and pursuing leadership roles in HPC.
  • Showcase the contributions of underrepresented groups in the N8 HPC environment through initiatives like case studies, interviews, and social media engagement.
  • Ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities in all our events and activities.

To achieve these goals, we are putting together an action group comprised of academics, research software engineers, researchers, and senior managers. This group will meet at least three times annually, with one open meeting inviting broader participation from N8 CIR members. The aim is to develop, implement, and monitor initiatives promoting diversity, inclusion, and accessibility across the N8. Please contact the WHPC N8 CIR Chapter lead, Mariann, at mariann.hardey@durham.ac.uk if you want to be involved.

Keynote Presentation from the 2025 DRI Retreat

Watch this inspiring and practical keynote presentation, in which Anita Banerji (University of Manchester, Software Sustainability Institute) addresses how we can support a wider range of people and roles in digital research infrastructure (DRI).

Drawing on insights from the social sciences, Anita explores the systemic barriers faced by underrepresented groups, the real impact of inclusive practices, and how DRI careers intersect with research culture and recognition.

This talk includes:

  • Reflections on how DRI careers are perceived and valued
  • What supports or hinders career progression
  • Practical advice for making inclusion work sustainable
  • A guided reflection to help viewers identify next steps in their own journey
