Research Software Engineering

There are Research Software Engineering (RSE) groups at each of the N8 Research Partnership Universities.

In most cases these central RSE groups support researchers operating anywhere in the university. Some universities also have domain-specific RSE groups that specialise in providing support to academics in a particular research area (e.g. environmental sciences, health sciences or physics).

To discuss your RSE needs and to find out how support from research software engineers could help improve the research that you and your colleagues undertake please contact the lead RSE at your institution using the links below. If they are unable to answer your query, please get in touch with the N8 CIR RSE Theme Lead, Sam Bland.

Regardless of the structure of your RSE department one thing is certain; the skills RSEs have, coupled to the ever-growing power of high performance and high throughput computing (HPC and HTC), have the potential to enable researchers to analyse significantly more data quicker and with major improvements in accuracy. Speaking and working with RSEs will offer you and your team new insight into software tools.

If you still aren’t sure exactly what an RSE does, or how they can help your research or group then our case studies might help. They explain how RSEs have helped to accelerate or expand research possibilities, developed apps or products for research, or simply explain the rationale for RSE groups existing in the first place.
