Bede Governance

N8 CIR's high-performance computing platform, Bede, has several groups that contribute to its running and operation. This ensures that all of the N8 universities and their academic domains are represented

Bede Management Board

The Bede Management Board consists of the Bede Director and N8 CIR RIE Theme Lead. They act as a liaison between Bede’s main funders, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and other stakeholders within the N8 Research Partnership. Major decisions concerning Bede are taken by them in coordination with the N8 CIR Steering Group.

Any tickets submitted to the Bede on-site sysadmin team that are not closed within ten working days will be escalated to the Bede Management Board.

Director and Deputy Director

The project’s director and deputy director manage the relationship between Bede’s main funders, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and other stakeholders within the N8 Research Partnership.

On-site Platforms Group

Led by the head of the on-site platforms group, this team is based at Durham University and ensure all of Bede’s physical equipment, including the system’s Power 9 CPUs, NVIDIA Tesla T4 GPUs and the Lustre filestore are maintained and functioning perfectly. They also work to ensure that the required software packages are available to researchers and that scheduled jobs run in a timely manner.

This group also registers projects on the system and creates user accounts via SAFE.

Bede Support Group

The Bede Support Group (BSG) is a subgroup of the N8 CIR PWG and is led by the RIE Theme Lead, RSE Theme Lead and the head of the on-site platforms group.

The Bede Support group consists of research software engineers, research infrastructure engineers and system administrators from across the N8 Research Partnership. The group works together to answer technical queries relating to Bede and support Bede Users in all software-related queries for porting their code to Bede, running it there and using the features of the platform effectively and efficiently. They also organise training sessions.

The BSG communicates via a Slack channel and a mailing list and meet once per quarter. If you have a technical query about Bede or need support porting your code to the machine please contact your local Bede RSE.

The group is also supported by partners from IBM and OCF, ensuring Bede is utilised in the most effective way possible.

N8 CIR Project Working Group

The Project Working Group consists of senior Research IT technical staff from all N8 universities. The group meets on a quarterly basis and you can find out more on the N8 CIR Governance page.

Bede User Group

The Bede User Group is an open forum that meets three times per year and is comprised of all users of Bede who wish to join. This naturally includes PIs and researchers as well as many of the Bede Support Group. During these regular meetings the group discuss issues and identify ways to improve hardware and software utilisation. Between meetings, issues and suggestions can be raised on the dedicated Bede User Group channel on the Bede Slack workspace.

All Bede Users can join the Bede Slack workspace by contacting the RSE Theme Lead. This workspace gives the possibility for quick-turnaround support by other Bede users and members of the Bede Support Group.

Detailed information about the Bede User Group can be found with its Terms of Reference.

Anyone who uses Bede can join the group. To request access please Contact us.
