Tools for Data FAIRification - overcoming barriers in data discoverability and reuse

This seminar is part of Sheffield’s Data Stewards Network in collaboration with the N8 CIR where experts in their field share their experiences.

The session opened with an introduction by Qwin Saikia (Research Data Steward, University of Sheffield Library), who outlines the background of the Data Stewards Network and introduces the FAIR Data and Software competition, held to mark the 10th anniversary of the FAIR Principles. Following this, Ric Campbell (Data Scientist/Manager at DataConnect, University of Sheffield, and N8-CIR RDM Theme Lead) provides an overview of N8-CIR's current activities and highlights upcoming opportunities for audience engagement.

Streamlining Data Management Planning with Data Stewardship Wizard Kryštof Komanec

Czech Technical University / DSW / FAIR Wizard

About the Speaker: Kryštof Komanec is a member of both the DSW team based at the Czech Technical University in Prague and the Prague-based FAIR Wizard team. Kryštof primarily conducts training and provides support for DSW and FAIR Wizard across various user groups and experience levels, equipping them with the knowledge required to use the tools effectively. Additionally, he contributes to the development of these tools and is involved in several initiatives—including ELIXIR CZ and the Czech National Repository Platform project—aimed at improving research data management practices and infrastructure.

The File Check Assistant - A User-Friendly Tool for Improving Data Reusability Matthew Nichols

About the speaker: Dr Matthew Nichols is a Data Steward – Technical Specialist in the Digital Research group at Lancaster. He leads the technical development of data management tools for both the Environmental Information Data Centre (EIDC) and the Data Stewardship Team. His work also includes facilitating the ingestion of FAIR environmental data into the EIDC and supporting the centre’s day-to-day operations. He also contributes to data science and integration projects that improve the discoverability and usability of environmental datasets from UKCEH and other sources.

Automated ReadMe Generation with the URGE Tool Dag-Even Martinsen Torsøe and Ali Abdurhman Kelil

University of South-Eastern Norway

About the speakers: Dag‑Even Torsøe is a Senior Librarian at the University of South‑Eastern Norway (USN) and leads the USN Research Data Support group. Ali Abdurhman Kelil (PhD) is a Senior Academic Librarian at USN, a member of the same group, and the main developer of the idea behind URGE.

Both have extensive experience in research data curation, particularly working with platforms such as Figshare and Dataverse. Their work focuses on supporting researchers and students at USN across the entire research data lifecycle—from data collection and management to archiving and sharing. They are especially engaged in developing and promoting semi‑automated tools, such as URGE, to make the creation of README files for datasets more efficient, scalable, and user‑friendly.
