Introduction

Are you interested in materiality and cultural heritage? Do you want to see how innovative 3D scanning and modelling can shape new approaches to digital research and communication? Join us in the Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub, kindly supported by the N8 Digital Humanities Computationally Intensive Research Centre of Excellence (N8 CIR), for a showcase of how high-quality 3D models of cultural heritage artefacts can shape research. We will be joined by speakers from four example research projects from across the Universities of Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, and museum and gallery partners, who have used new capacities for high-resolution 3D scans to digitally reconstruct and print artefacts from antiquity to the present day.

Session 1: How Can We Use 3D Printing in Cultural Heritage Spaces?

  • 3D Printing and Accessibility in Leeds City Museum, Jordan Keighley (Leeds City Museum)
  • 3D Printing in the John Rylands So Far, Tony Richards and Jo Castle (John Rylands Research Institute and Library, University of Manchester)

Session 2: Digital Reconstructions and 3D Printing

  • Reconstructing Early Medieval Ivories in the World Museum, Liverpool, Eddie Meehan (University of Leeds, Digital Creativity and Cultures Hub), Jordan Poole (University of Liverpool, Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology), and Chrissy Partheni (National Museums Liverpool)
  • Getting a-head: the possibilities of digital restoration, RJ Wade (University of Leeds, Cultural Collections and Galleries)
