N8 CIR AI for National Security and Defence workshop

Join us for a workshop to discuss developing ideas for future funding bids to the UKRI for AI applications in National Security and Defence (NS&D)

30 Mar 2026 10 a.m. — 4 p.m.

This in-person meeting is open to all members of the N8 partnership universities (Durham, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, and York).

The UKRI budget for National Security and Defence (NS&D) is increasing1, with NS&D being seen in the widest context (including police and rescue services).

We have been advised that there will soon be a funding call in the area of NS&D, and that it will focus on problems that AI can address. To bring together the strongest possible teams for this call, we are inviting people interested in AI for NS&D to a workshop which will be held at Newcastle University in the School of Computing (Urban Sciences Building). The focus of this event will be to learn who is working in this area and develop initial ideas and consortia for potential bids.

This event will be co-sponsored by the N8 and research groups at Newcastle working in Data Science, AI, and Cybersecurity.
