The impact of Digital Research Infrastructure on research at Durham University

Degree course: MSc Scientific Computing & Data Analysis

I completed my BSc in Physics at Durham University and am now studying for an MSc in Scientific Computing & Data Analysis also at Durham University. I enjoyed the scientific computing/modelling aspect of my undergraduate degree the most and wanted to expand my skills in this area. After graduation, I would like to work as a data scientist or machine learning engineer, perhaps for a high-level sporting institution. I would also be interested in becoming a scientific writer, as I enjoy explaining technical concepts and helping others to learn. Outside of academics, my passion is fencing, and I would love to be able to continue to compete at an international level or be involved in coaching, which is something I have found very rewarding during my time at university.

Why did you apply for this internship?
I am interested in becoming a scientific writer after graduation, and I believe this internship will provide invaluable experience in a similar area.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
I hope to gain confidence in talking with experts in their field and asking the right questions, synthesising this information to create a compelling piece of work, and through this improve my scientific writing skills.

I chose CHSS at Durham through Clearing because of its flexibility and its ability to bring together different perspectives in a genuinely holistic way (and because, admittedly, I’m a little indecisive). I’ve loved how the disciplines are deeply interconnected while still retaining their own distinct approaches. This interdisciplinary structure has encouraged me to think critically, comparatively, and beyond a single framework. After graduating, I intend to move abroad and pursue a career in diplomacy. I’m particularly drawn to this path because of my love for debate, politics, learning new languages, and—most importantly—travelling and engaging with different cultures.

Why did you apply for this internship?
I applied for this internship because it represents a deliberate step outside my comfort zone. Coming from a humanities and social sciences background, computing is not my primary field of study, but I’m keen to develop technical skills that are increasingly important across sectors, including diplomacy and international affairs. This internship offers the opportunity to challenge myself, broaden my skill set, and gain hands-on experience in a field that is unfamiliar but highly relevant to the modern world.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
A new understanding!!
