The N8 CIR is pleased to offer internships that allow students to develop their computational skills in a research environment.

As part of ongoing N8 funding for the N8 CIR, we are pleased to provide 8-week undergraduate internships which run during summer vacations. These projects are aimed at penultimate- or final-year undergraduate students and are designed to teach key skills and inspire them to consider digital Research Technical Professional (dRTP) careers.

Kinga's decision to study Chemistry stemmed from her interest to understanding change and the processes that shape the world around us. Her passion for Chemistry has motivated her to pursue a career in the field, and upon completing my MChem degree she intends to continue studies at the doctoral level and work towards gaining a PhD in Chemistry.

Lewis is currently studying a broad range of statistics, including machine learning, statistical modelling, and more computational modern Bayesian methods. He has a particular interest in machine learning, and data science, and plans to go into one of these fields after he graduates.

Ernest has a deep passion for academic research. He chose a degree in Computer Science because of his interest in developing computing skills to solve major problems, more specifically related to promoting environmental sustainability. His interests lie in AI/ML engineering.

Crystal is a Mathematics and Computer Science student. She enjoys her course and sees a big advantage is the diversity in which you can apply yourself. She personally finds the use and development of libraries for specialised statistical purposes and broader machine learning to be particular areas of interest, and would love to pursue research or applied work in this field.

Millie is studying Classical Civilisations with English. During her degree she's especially loved eco-critical literature, early Roman epic poetry and exploring sensory perceptions in ancient society. She became interested in Digital Research from hours spent reading, to accessing large-scale classical art databases and appreciates how it helps in streamlining her studies.

Owais in a Computer Science student and has a strong interest in how computational methods can be used to solve real-world problems. He chose his degree because I enjoy problem-solving, logical thinking and understanding how software systems are built and applied in different contexts.

Nell is studying English Language and Literature. She is fascinated by language whether that be through the mundane everyday exchange of words or the way human experience is captured in Literature.

Abhiram is studying Computer Science with a year in industry and the University of Liverpool.

Shivansh is studying for a BSc in Computational Science at the University of Liverpool.

Abdullah is a final-year Computer Science student. He chose the subject because he was fascinated by how quickly AI was developing and the impact it was beginning to have across different industries. He is especially interested in building and evaluating AI systems to better understand their capabilities, limitations, and real-world applications.

Hanzila is completing a degree in Computer science with an Industrial placement. He has a love of problem-solving, whether he is working through an algorithmic challenge or designing system architecture from scratch.

Urbi is a final-year Mathematics and Statistics student with a particular interest in statistical modelling, machine learning, and health data science. She is especially drawn to health-related research because of its potential to make a tangible impact on people's lives.

James is a Mathematics student who has a strong interest in applied mathematics, data analysis and machine learning. His chose this subject because he enjoys problem-solving and the way mathematical ideas can be used to understand complex systems. Throughout his degree, he has particularly enjoyed modules involving statistics, coding and mathematical modelling, as they have shown him how quantitative methods can be applied in the real world.

Shamik is a second-year student and chose Computer Science because he has been passionate about programming since the age of 13 when he taught himself C++ .

Adam is studying Mechanical Engineering and specialises in computational analysis.

Lewie graduated with a degree in Computer Science at the University of Sheffield in the summer of 2026.

Echo is a Computer Science student whose interest in programming started when he joined a coding club at the age of 8. He has been interested in medical and assistive computing for the last 6 years. He is enjoying research in healthcare computing at university and aims to do a PhD and go into academia after he graduates.

Artem is a fourth-year student and chose to study Computer Science out of a genuine love for computers. His passion for academic research was sparked during my third-year dissertation, where he developed an early-stopping method for AutoML. He continued on that path by researching LLM behavioural alignment as part of my fourth-year module.

George is graduating with a degree in Computer Science this summer. He enjoys software development and completed a year in industry at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. He likes algorithmic approaches to solving problems, specifically using constraint programming.

Noah is moving into his final year of an integrated Masters course in Theoretical Physics. He originally chose the subject due to its more mathematical and programming-based approach to experimentation and physical understanding. His studies have drawn him to consider the mathematical approaches a theoretician needs to prioritise and the computational modelling processes most modern theoretical experiments utilise.

Anna is a final-year integrated master's student in Biomedical Science, with experience in both experimental and computational research. Her academic experience has allowed her to begin build tools to answer biological questions and has taught her that data generation, processing and analysis are inseparable.

We have secured funding from EPSRC to run internships from October to March 2026. There are two project styles on offer. The first is so students can develop their skills in computational research and discover more about careers in research software engineering. The second is for students to learn about the various ways that digital research infrastructure has benefited researchers across the N8 universities.

Toby is a Computer Science student who chose the subject because he enjoys applying mathematics to computing scenarios. After graduation he would like to go into the field of Machine Learning Research.

Shreyan is studying for a BSc Financial Mathematics because he has always been fascinated by how abstract mathematical ideas can be applied to solve real-world problems.

Hannah studies Computer Science and chose the subject because of a love of learning how computers work and tinkering with them, which developed into a coding hobby and then a degree.

James chose a degree in Biophysics after writing an essay about the interactions between human cells and viruses for an EPQ during his A-Levels. He enjoys investigating biological systems at the nanoscale in his studies, with a particular interest in molecular dynamics simulations, single-molecule optical-magnetic tweezers, and single-molecule FRET using Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence microscopy.

Sujith is studying for an MSc in Engineering Management. He chose this subject to combine his existing knowledge from his degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering and managerial experience. On completion of his masters degree he plans to apply my knowledge after my course to work in a profession that links engineering and management to work on project efficiency and effectiveness

Facundo is an Electronic Engineering with Music Technology Systems student, specialising in audio DSP, real-time systems, and music information retrieval. He chose his degree because it combines his background as a musician and composer with a strong mathematical and computer engineering education, which informs his ability to build tools that analyse, transform, and generate sound.

Bilegsaikhan is a Computer Science with a pathway in Data Science student at the University of Liverpool. He chose this path because he has always been drawn to problem solving and understanding how intelligent systems work. He's particularly interested in machine learning, research workflows and computational tools that support scientific discovery.

Zhiheng is studying for an MSc in Advanced Computer Science. He feels the structure allows him to further his general computer science education while specifically gaining in-depth knowledge in Artificial Intelligence. Upon completion of the programme, his goal is to pursue a PhD with a research focus on AI.

Coker is a medical doctor with a developing specialisation in health data science. He is currently studying for an MRes in Data Science for Health at the University of Liverpool.

Elliot has recently graduated with a degree in Spanish Studies and Computing. What he enjoyed most about was that he could be creating an app, discussing the ethics of AI and analysing a Spanish film in one day. This mix of perspectives across different disciplines helped him appreciate the value of approaching problems from multiple points of view.

George is studying for an MSc in Biology because of an interest in genetics. After graduation he hopes to do a PhD in bioinformatics.

Aadityaa is studying Computer Science. He chose this subject because it gave him a way to explore the full realm of what’s possible with technology. He enjoys that you don't just study concepts but work on real world applications. He is especially interested in interdisciplinary areas like digital humanities, GIS, and machine learning, where computation intersects with other domains.

Grace is studying Medicine and chose the subject because she is interested in people and wanted a job where she could talk to people from all walks of life daily. She is interested in the political side of medicine and how the world we live in affects our health. When she graduates she hopes to work in clinical HIV or carry on in academia and complete a PhD in public health.

Isaac is a Psychology student at the university of Leeds. His goal is to complete a Clinical Psychology PhD and work in the NHS, expanding his knowledge and making a difference for as many people as possible.

We funded 22 8-week long summer internships to promote computational research to undergraduates across the N8 partnership that align with our three themes: Digital Health, Digital Humanities, and Machine Learning.

Jenelle Bankas is a computer science student at the University of Leeds.

Maddison is studying English Language and Literature at the University of Leeds.

Mysha Zaman is a second-year undergraduate studying for a BSc Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Leeds. She has a strong interest in mental health and is keen to better understand the challenges faced by individuals in mental health settings.

Tom is studying for a BSc Honours in Computer Science at Newcastle University. He joined the N8 CIR summer internship after completing a 12-month placement with Lloyds Banking Group.

Zain gained a first class honours BSs in Computer Science form Newcastle University in 2025. He worked on the N8 CIR summer Internship before starting an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh.

Daniela is studying Computer Science, with a year in industry, at Newcastle University.

Arthur Chai is a 4th year civil engineering student at Durham University. He intends to pursue a PhD in numerical geotechnical engineering. His 4th year undergraduate dissertation tutor recommended the internship to him as a way of developing his skills before starting the PhD.

Samuel graduated with a first class honours degree in Computer Science from Durham University. He completed this project following graduation.

Will Cook is a third year undergraduate studying computer science at Lancaster University. He is interested in technology and its practical application in the real world. Will enjoys solving problems in a logical and structured way.

Ben Hardy is a 2nd year undegraduate studying computer science at Lancaster University.

Teleri is a Zoology student at Lancaster University.

Hamzah is a second-year Computer Science student at the University of Liverpool with a passion for machine learning, bioinformatics and cybersecurity. As a member of the Liverpool Enterprise and Leadership Academy, he is focused on driving innovation and positive change across his industry.

Zichen received a first class honours degree in Computer Science at the University of Liverpool in 2025 and completed his internship following graduation.

Al Aiham is a second year undergraduate studying Computer Science at the University of Liverpool.

We received funding from EPSRC to support internships and increase interaction with the Bede Supercomputer within the N8 CIR community.

It is not only interns that benefit from our programme; supervisors also find it rewarding and productive for their research and personal development.

This September, our 2024 class of interns took to York to present their work over the summer to an audience of researchers from across the N8.

After an incredibly successful pilot, the N8 CIR Internship Programme will return in 2025.

On Friday 12 September, many of our summer interns came together at The National Centre for Early Music in York to showcase their work.

We have secured funding from EPSRC to run student internships through Michaelmas term to March 2026.

The N8 CIR is pleased to announce that we are now taking proposals from academics and digital research technical professionals for our undergraduate intern programme. Students will be invited to apply for them from 16 March, 2026.
