The Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) Retreat is a five-day event involving panel discussions and group sessions for technology specialists to develop soft skills and network with peers. In collaboration with UKRI, we hosted the third of these events in Manchester in January 2025.

Monday 13th January - Collaboration and Communication
On the first day of the DRI Retreat 2025, we discuss how best to find collaboration partners with the DRI and academic communities and develop training materials.


Tuesday 14th January - Finding Answers to Your Questions
On the second day of the DRI Retreat 2025, the funding landscape, relationships with industrial partners, barriers to accessing digital infrastructure, and data collection are discussed.


Wednesday 15th January - Emerging Technologies and the Future of DRI
On the third day of the DRI Retreat 2025, DRI workflows, the environmental impacts of infrastructure, and security and compliance in DRI are discussed.


Thursday 16th January - Leadership and Career Development
On day four of the DRI Retreat 2025, career progression, recruitment, leadership, and mentorship are considered.


Friday 17th January - The Way Forward for DRI Professionals
On the final day of the DRI Retreat 2025, career development and the roles of DRI professionals are discussed followed by a keynote presentation from Anita Banerji (University of Manchester, Software Sustainability Institute).

The opening day will introduce the event and end with networking over a few drinks.


Engagement
TUESDAY 19th MARCH
The sessions today will help grow collaboration between different roles, for example, software engineering and data management, researchers, and research infrastructure engineers. We will discuss the perspective of the researchers and users and find ways of communicating requirements and documentation.


Facilitation
WEDNESDAY 20th MARCH
Today, we dive into the world of research technology. An opportunity to see what is under the hood of current research computing technology and what we can expect to see in the near future.


Leadership
THURSDAY 21st MARCH
Leadership doesn’t always come from the top down. Today’s sessions explore leadership from all angles, including personal development, influencing others, and leading teams through long-term challenges, including political and funding changes.
