On 24 March 2021, N8 CIR's Research Data Management Network hosted their second event. Four speakers discussed a range of issues relating to the challenges of working with sensitive and restricted data.

Ethically sharing data from studies involving human participants
The sharing of data from studies involving human participants is growing and researchers are increasingly aware and supportive of this requirement and can be keen to deposit their data in our University repository.
However, their ethics paperwork often shows a different story – sharing wasn’t planned for at the beginning of the project and it was not clear to participants that data would be deposited and potentially shared. Over time we have developed and refined a workflow – firstly to ensure that no data is deposited and/or shared against the consent of the participant and, recently, to help researchers take these requirements into account at the planning stages.

Managing sensitive research data at the University of Bristol: from planning to publication
This talk will address key areas in which the University of Bristol Research Data Service offers support to researchers dealing with sensitive data, including meeting GDPR requirements, appropriate wording of consent forms, and assessment of risk in data publication and methods to mitigate this.
Zosia is an experienced information professional with a background in health informatics and research data management in the higher education and research sectors.
She has been a Chartered Member of CILIP since 2012. Zosia is currently part of Library Research Support at the University of Bristol, where she specialises in providing training and support to academics in research metrics/bibliometrics and sensitive research data management, including the launch of a new dataset disclosure risk assessment service to facilitate safe publication of sensitive data.

Secure Research Data Safe Havens
Gary will be presenting on the progress of the Secure Research Data Safe Haven at Manchester, and how the learning from that is being applied in Liverpool with the new Civic Data Cooperative project.
Gary is the Director of the Liverpool City Region Civic Data Cooperative, based at the University of Liverpool. His main interests are in secure research environments for health data and new models of data governance. He previously worked as CTO for the Connected Health Cities project.
