Degree course: Chemistry
LinkedIn Profile

My decision to study Chemistry stems from my interest in understanding change and the processes that shape the world around us. Chemistry is a continually advancing discipline, with new discoveries and innovations constantly expanding our knowledge and creating opportunities to address real-world problems. This passion has motivated me to pursue a career in the field, and upon completing my MChem degree, I intend to continue my studies at doctoral level and work towards a PhD in Chemistry.

Why did you apply for this internship?
I applied because I intend to pursue a PhD in Chemistry and a career in research. This opportunity allows me to gain practical research experience which would be an excellent foundation for my future academic and professional goals.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
I hope to gain hands-on experience in computational chemistry by developing techniques such as molecular dynamics, dissipative particle dynamics, and Python-based data analysis. I'm particularly interested in seeing how computational methods can be used to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. I'm also excited to gain research experience through this opportunity by working within an academic research group, developing my problem-solving and analytical skills, and gaining a better understanding of how computational and experimental chemistry can work together to design new materials.

MCMC Convergence and Tessellation Budget Sensitivity in the AddiVortes Model
Intern: Lewis Maltby
Degree course: MMATH Mathematics
LinkedIn Profile

I am currently studying a broad range of statistics, including machine learning, statistical modelling, and more computational modern Bayesian methods. I have a particular interest in machine learning, and data science, and plan to go into one of these fields after I graduate. Big data, and hence the need for data modelling, is everywhere in modern life, and the need for it is only growing. I hope to be able to contribute here by investigating and exploring new methods, like I will be doing in my internship this year.

Why did you apply for this internship?
I wanted to explore research internships that could help me develop my research skills, and allow me to contribute to the field. Whilst many internships with different companies exist, I am glad that with this internship I will be able to work in a more research-based environment, and learn more broadly about machine learning, without having to choose a specific industry or company to apply it to yet. This is important to me because the applications of our research will be very broad.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
In completing the project, I hope to gain a greater understanding of machine learning, and to develop my technical skills, specifically, programming in R, and working with HPC resources.

Deep Generalised Models
Intern: Nguyen Thien An
Degree course: BSc Computer Science
LinkedIn Profile

I was initially drawn to Computer Science through my interest in programming and technology. During my studies, I developed a passion for AI/ML from both theoretical and applied perspectives, which motivates me to pursue a postgraduate research degree in the area after completing my studies. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing basketball, chess, and working on side projects.

Why did you apply for this internship?
This internship provides an invaluable opportunity to work with an academic researcher on a novel machine learning project. I want to to leverage the Bede Supercomputer to work with real-world, large-scale datasets and conduct experiments using advanced machine learning models. I am also excited to develop my Research Software Engineering (RSE) skills through the regular training and mentorship provided by the dRTP during the internship.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
I hope to develop best practices for leveraging HPC facilities and managing data when processing large-scale datasets, as well as for setting up GPU clusters to train and evaluate machine learning models. Besides that, I am also excited to learn new RSE skills and gain hands-on experience on building new models.
