Improving data standardisation tools for global neuroscience collaboration

Why did you apply for this internship?

I really wanted to improve my research skills and develop a better understanding of the technological aspect of research.

What did you hope to gain in completing this project?

I hoped to get more experience partaking in research projects related to psychology, and wanted to understand more of the technological side of things! By involving myself in this project, I was seeking to further my knowledge and confidence and apply my skills to aid its completion.

Project Overview

Creation of a document to guide a novice through the conversion of Electroencephalogram (EEG) data into Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) formatting, by writing and explaining python code.

What are the key results?

I created a document to guide a beginner through the conversion of their EEG data into BIDS compliancy:

  • Promoted data standardisation and sharing
  • Lowered barriers to entry for data standardisation
  • Highlighted the importance of good beginner support and accessibility while creating a more open science culture.

How do you feel you have benefited from completing this internship, and has it made you consider future career paths?

I have developed both individually and professionally, gaining coding skills, furthering my self-management abilities, and becoming better at responding to feedback and problem solving.

Additionally, I have become more aware of salient issues within the open science movement and have become more knowledgeable regarding EEG data. These beneficial experiences have further solidified my desire to incorporate neuro-technology into any future careers, and to continue coding!
