On Tuesday 9th September, we invited our 2024 class of interns to the National Centre for Early Music in York to present their work to their supervisors and other community members. We had 17 interns attend in total, with 1 intern submitting a pre-recorded presentation. Topics included bird sounds, music for mental health, pediatric cancer tools, map making, protein simulation and many more
This event, the first showcase we have run, has been incredibly positively received by interns and supervisors alike.
Attendees greatly enjoyed the experience: "Excellent organisation with an engaging set of activities that made the whole process informative, interesting and very pleasant. It also allowed for people to talk! Really positive."
The internship programme and the showcase was run by Mariann Hardey, the N8 equality lead and a researchers at the University of Durham. She remarked:
"It's been incredibly rewarding to see students from across the N8 region dive headfirst into research, gaining hands-on experience with a supercomputer and then sharing their findings. The enthusiasm and dedication of both the students and their mentors have made this program memorable and brilliant. I'm so excited to continue offering these opportunities in the future. A huge thanks goes out to the project supervisors who took the time to mentor their students and support their presentations."
We look forward to publishing some of our students' work on our website.
