N8 CIR Event Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct will be reviewed and updated regularly to reflect best practices. Feedback on this code of conduct is welcome and can be sent to our enquiries inbox.


Introduction

The N8 CIR is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants at our events. This Code of Conduct outlines our expectations for behaviour and reflects our core values of respect, inclusivity, diversity, academic integrity, and open dialogue. By participating in N8 CIR events, you agree to uphold these values and contribute to a positive and welcoming community.


Event Coordinator, Chair, and Panellist Responsibilities

These are responsible for moderating discussions, ensuring all participants are treated respectfully, and taking immediate action if code of conduct violations occur.


Unacceptable Behaviour & Prohibited Conduct

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Harassment (verbal, physical, or online) based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
  • Discrimination, including microaggressions.
  • Disruptive or disrespectful behaviour that interferes with event proceedings.
  • Intimidation, threats, or coercion.
  • Doxing or unauthorized sharing of private information.
  • Online abuse, including cyberbullying and trolling.
  • Failure to maintain research integrity, including plagiarism or misrepresentation of data.


Online & Hybrid Events

Participants in online and hybrid events are expected to:

  • Mute their microphones when not speaking.
  • Use respectful language in chat and Q&A features.
  • Be aware of their virtual background and surroundings.
  • Avoid sharing screen content that is not relevant to the event.


Bystander Responsibility & Intervention

We encourage all participants to actively intervene if they witness behaviour that violates this Code of Conduct. If you feel safe to do so, you can:

  • Directly address the inappropriate behaviour.
  • Offer support to the person being targeted.
  • Report the incident to event organizers.
  • Understand that inaction can also cause harm.


Photography, Recording, and Social Media

Presenters have the right to control the recording and sharing of their presentations.

  • Explicit consent must be obtained before recording or photographing presentations or individuals.
  • Respect the privacy of participants, especially in informal settings.
  • Use social media responsibly. Avoid sharing sensitive information or personal attacks.
  • Remember that your online behaviour reflects on the N8 CIR community.
  • N8 CIR will act on reported code of conduct violations that occur on social media relating to N8 CIR events.
  • Clear signage will be used at events regarding recording and social media policies.


Reporting Violations

If you experience or witness a violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it immediately through:

All reports will be treated confidentially and investigated impartially.

Retaliation against anyone making a report is strictly prohibited.


Actions Taken

Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in:

  • Verbal warning.
  • Removal from the event.
  • Exclusion from future N8 CIR events.
  • Referral to relevant authorities.
