Research Themes

N8 CIR runs training and community events and provides resources for N8 researchers within three key themes: Digital Health, Digital Humanities, and Machine Learning.

These themes have been chosen using the following criteria:

  • Strategic importance for some or all N8 partners, reflected in institutional and N8 strategies;
  • Outstanding opportunity for research innovation through the novel application of CIR methods;
  • National priorities, with identified and substantial funding streams through UKRI; outstanding scope for innovation in underpinning CIR methods, giving a competitive advantage to N8 researchers.

Each theme has a local representative whose contact details can be found on the Research Theme page or the University Theme Lead page.

There are also Research Software Engineering and Research Infrastructure Engineering themes, which cut across all our research themes.

Connect with researchers across the N8

You asked for a mechanism to talk directly with researchers across the N8. To facilitate this we have created a dedicated N8 CIR Slack workspace where you can share recent publications and ideas you would like to find new collaboration partners for, discuss upcoming funding calls and suggest meetings and sandpit events you'd like us to host. Join us by clicking the link below or find out more on our webpage.

Join the N8 CIR Slack workspace

If you are having trouble signing in, go to https://n8cir.slack.com/ and select the 'Create an account' link in the top right-hand corner using your university email account.

This workspace is only available to those currently working or researching at Durham University, Lancaster University, the University of Leeds, the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester, Newcastle University, the University of Sheffield or the University of York.

Child of the North

The universities that make up the N8 Research Partnership, and the North more broadly, are home to a wealth of expertise, innovative initiatives and collaborations, and cutting-edge infrastructure to support research about children and childhood.

The Child of the North initiative seeks to build on these to benefit children growing up in the region and beyond. This includes connecting to policy makers and stakeholders to encourage the uptake of evidence into policy by the government and other organisations. This research encompasses all our themes and we encourage our researchers to find out more and get involved.
