Research Project: Pipeline for fitting thermal responses of mosquito traits

Why did you apply for this internship?

I am keen to develop my skills in data analysis and coding in R as this is an area I have really enjoyed and want to ensure I learn best practice in, as this is a skill that would be very valuable for my career.

What did you hope to gain in completing this project?

As well as developing my skills in R, I hoped to gain a wider understanding of the role of research software engineering and how this could become a part of my career. I was also really looking forward to getting a deeper insight to the research project and being able to make a useful contribution.

Project Overview

Fitting thermal responses of mosquito traits using the rTPC package in R and creating a user interface in R shiny to be able to select which species, traits, and models to use

What were the key results of your research project?

During this project I succeeded in creating an interactive interface for fitting thermal responses of mosquitoes and highlighted useful alterations to the package developers.

How do you feel you have benefitted from completing this internship and has it made you consider future career paths?

I think my programming skills have developed massively. It has also made me feel more confident that I could apply for roles that are more related to research software engineering, and better know what aspects I enjoy. Coming from outside of this field, I do recognise that I have much more to learn, but feel that this internship has been a crucial stepping stone.
