Research project: #WardSonar technical development
Why did you apply for this internship?
I was excited by the opportunity for the #WardSonar project. I’m passionate about using technology to create safer, more responsive care environments.
This internship perfectly aligned with my interest in user-centric design, data security, and digital health innovation. I was eager to apply my technical skills while learning from a multidisciplinary team to help redevelop #WardSonar into a mobile app that can make a real impact in the NHS and beyond.
What did you hope to gain in completing this project?
I hoped to gain practical experience in developing user-centred, secure digital health solutions that address real challenges in mental health care. I was keen to learn how to co-design technology with healthcare professionals and service users, while building skills in ethical decision-making, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary teamwork.
Project Overview
#WardSonar is a digital tool that collects real-time feedback from patients in mental health wards, enabling staff to identify and address safety concerns quickly.
The original tablet-based system demonstrated feasibility and value but was decommissioned after funding ended. This project focuses on re-developing #WardSonar as an application with improved usability, stronger data security, interoperability with existing healthcare systems, and accessible design for both patients and staff.
What were the key results of your research project?
- Successfully developed a functional web application to support the aims of the project.
- Implemented data visualisation features, allowing information to be presented in a clear and accessible way for easier interpretation.
- Designed and added a manager/admin interface, which was not available in the original version, providing staff with better oversight and control.
How do you feel you have benefited from completing this internship and has it made you consider future career paths?
Through this internship, I feel that my research interest has grown significantly, and it has motivated me to pursue a career in this area further. The experience has also helped me build confidence in developing full-stack applications, which has strengthened both my technical skills and my ability to work on end-to-end solutions.
Overall, the internship has confirmed my enthusiasm for research while also expanding my career possibilities in technology and applied research.
