Microsoft Azure for Research

This short workshop, delivered by Microsoft’s Education Team, will introduce the Azure platform and how it can be used to support and accelerate research activity.

The workshop is split into two parts with a short break in between.

The first part will look at High Performance Computing on Azure, including a detailed review of VM services for HPC, NVIDIA GPU details, InfiniBand architecture and FPGA services.

The session will go on to look at High Throughput Computing on Azure and storage options for HPC. This will lead on to a series of use cases:

  • Genomics
  • Oil and gas simulations
  • Finance
  • Semiconductor design
  • Engineering
  • Weather modelling

The second part will cover example HPC and HTC Architectures before looking at deployment approaches including explanations of scheduler support, HPC/HTC Portal (Including build, utilisation and cost management) and batch.

The workshop will then cover security, cost management, including cost comparison with on-premise HPC.

The final part of the session will outline some other resources including Machine Learning as a service and Cognitive services. Finally finishing with a Q&A.

This session is only open to those working or studying at one of the universities in the N8 Research Partnership.
