Why did you apply for this internship?
I applied for the N8 CIR 2025 RSE undergraduate internship because I am passionate about machine learning and its potential to drive innovation in research. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects in machine learning, digital health, or digital humanities, aligning perfectly with my academic background and career aspirations. I am particularly excited about the chance to collaborate with experienced researchers and RSE mentors, learning from their expertise while contributing to impactful projects.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
Through this internship, I hope to deepen my understanding of advanced machine learning techniques and their practical applications in research. I am eager to learn best practices in research software engineering, including software design, testing, and optimization for large-scale data. Additionally, I aim to gain experience in collaborative development, version control, and effective communication of technical concepts within a research team. I also look forward to exploring the interdisciplinary aspects of digital health or digital humanities, depending on the project, to broaden my perspective on how machine learning can address real-world challenges.

Why did you apply for this internship?
I purposefully applied for this internship to immerse myself in research to prepare me for a PhD in machine learning. Throughout my time here, I have written numerous essays and experiments on recent technological advancements and hope to build on these skills and my knowledge further by exploring biocomputing with the support of my academic advisor.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?
Tom improve my communication skills and gain priceless insights on what working as part of a research team on real-world projects looks like. My future aspiration is to become a director in the tech industry, pushing for innovation and change. I am especially interested in working in and revolutionising bioinformatics, leveraging machine-learning techniques because of its connections to the medical field. Completing this internship would help me break barriers and showcase my skills more effectively, all the while doing what I love - research. I hope it will strengthen my PhD applications, so I can take another leap in the right direction to building a worthwhile, impactful career where I am challenged for the better.
