Agenda

9 - 10.15am – DRI System Components, Chair Alan Real

Digital Research Infrastructure includes software, hardware, infrastructure and networks, and data storage and security systems.

In this session we will discuss how we ensure these already complex components work together and can be scaled to meet local, regional and national research priorities.

Panellists, Tom Burnley, Mark Dixon, Steve Hindmarsh, Danielle Owen, Mark Parsons

10.45am - 12pm – Cloud Technologies,

Making sure you don’t get caught out if the cloud bursts.

Using the cloud is often seen as a quick and easy way to accelerate research, without expanding on-premise facilities. Is this belief true, are the motivations always pure?

In this session we will discuss the practicalities of public and private clouds, offer advice on how to access and experiment with the cloud, and leave it with your data, and budget, intact.

Panellists, Emma Barnes, Steve Hindmarsh, Simon Hood, Christopher Woods

12 - 1pm – Lunch

A chance to refuel and reflect, ahead of the afternoon sessions.

1 - 2.30pm – Novel Technologies, Chair Andrew Edmondson

Are new platforms just technology, for technology’s sake?

Many researchers are familiar with x86 systems and see them as an integral part of their work. But what about novel architectures, such as Bede’s Power9 CPUs and GPU acceleration?

In this session the panel will make the case for experimentation and offer strategies that will encourage researchers to join you on the journey. They will also discuss ways to alleviate disruption from these experiments and help you inspire fundamental change.

Panellists, Alastair Basden, Phil Hasnip, Mark Parsons, Robin Pinning, Heather Turner, Tobias Weinzierl

3 - 4.30pm – Managing a Portfolio, Chair Robert Haines

People always want a bigger slice of the pie, how can we ensure that everyone gets at least a bite?

In this session, we’ll introduce and discuss strategies to ensure that the finite resources available, including computational resources and software knowledge, are effectively and equitably distributed across projects and domains.

Panellists - Andrew Edmondson, Mark Turner, Mark Wilkinson, Christopher Woods

5 - 6pm – Unconference Session

In the spirit of feedback and collaboration that’s at the heart of the event, these two sessions will be led by conference attendees.

The discussions will draw out the key ideas and themes from the retreat so far, and use them to help attendees develop ideas and strategies that they can take back to their home institutions.
