Research Project Title: Advanced data analysis in the Humanities


Why did you apply for this internship?

My hunt for meaningfully contributing to research led me to apply to this internship. I trust that, through this internship, I would be able to build digital solutions that will aid further research.

What do you hope to gain in completing this project?

By completing this project, I hope to learn about how digital tools influence current research initiatives and build solutions that can be utilised to push these initiatives forward.


Project Overview

The project involved collaborating with 7 academics to drive digitisation initiatives in humanities fields, spearheading 6 projects to further their visions.


What were the key results of your project?

I worked on several projects within the humanities where I;

  • Remodelled the codebase of the American Spoken Corpus site, reducing complexity by 50%. Implemented a Dialect Map, for the visualisation of over 150 transcripts.
  • Extracted and visualized migration patterns from over 70 interview transcripts of the Troubles’ victims. - Devised a processing tool to pre-process, extract, and collate a corpus of around 600 text documents from Wikipedia XML exports.
  • Engineered an application for recognising and transcribing Polish texts from images.
  • Focused on extracting, processing, and analysing African social science journals, contributing to ongoing efforts in further study.


How do you feel you have benefited from completing this internship and has it made you consider future career paths?

Working in this internship gave me the opportunity to learn and evolve my knowledge, while contributing to impactful projects. I cherished working with my experienced supervisors, whose support led me to create tools and applications that envisioned their ideas. Before starting this internship, I was curious about my career prospects, unsure of a path. After this past summer, I am certain to consider a career in research software engineering.
